Surface Preparation
All surfaces to be painted must be cleaned of grease and oil using one or more of the following methods: detergent washing, solvent wiping or steam cleaning. The substrate must then be dried and free of moisture. Surface salts can only be removed by washing with pressurised water. Washing should be done with plenty of water. All loose particles, rust and mill scale must be removed by scraping, wire brushing or high-pressure water jetting. For best results, the surface should meet a minimum Swedish Standard Sa-2½ grit blasting cleanliness level. Acid and alkaline rust layers are neutralised by washing with clean water (5% ammonia solution may be used if necessary). For new steel, a surface profile of 37.5–62.5 mic should be achieved by mechanical abrasion (blasting) or chemical etching (acid etching) to increase surface roughness. Old surfaces should be cleaned with an industrial degreasing detergent that emulsifies in water and rinsed with plenty of pressurised water. After blasting, the first coat should be applied as soon as possible before the surface re-rusts.
Mixing and Thinning
Navipox-188 is supplied in two separate containers at their own mixing ratios. The entire contents of both components must be mixed together. First, stir the base material thoroughly with a mechanical mixer until it becomes homogeneous and fluid. After the base is thoroughly mixed, slowly add the hardener while continuing to stir. After all the hardener has been added, continue slow mixing for a further 5 minutes. The pot life of the mixture is approximately 2.00 hours at 25°C. At higher ambient temperatures this time decreases; at lower temperatures it increases. Thinning of Navipox-188 is not normally required or preferred.
Application
For optimum application properties and optimum working life of the paint mixture, mixing should be carried out at 25°C. In abnormally cold or hot conditions, efforts should be made to keep the material at 25°C. At temperatures above 25°C the pot life shortens considerably and a plural-component spray gun may be required.
- A Graco Bulldog 45/1 ratio or larger airless pump is recommended.
- Airless spray gun tip diameter should be selected between 0.023″–0.029″.
- Fluid hose internal diameter should be at least 3/8″ and length should not exceed 15 m excluding a short whip hose. For longer hoses, select hoses with a larger internal diameter. Long hoses with small internal diameters significantly reduce paint pressure at the gun tip and cause poor spray patterns. Increasing the pump pressure ratio may be necessary.
Navipox 188 can also be applied to floors and decks by squeegee and/or roller. Do not allow the paint to remain in application equipment for more than 2.00 hours. In case of application delay, flush the equipment with thinner. Although Navipox 188 is a high-solids product, good ventilation protects the applicator, prevents condensation on the paint film and helps achieve proper paint performance. Ventilation should be maintained throughout the curing period.
Safety Precautions
This product is flammable. Keep away from heat and open flames. Keep container closed. Apply in a well-ventilated area. Avoid prolonged and repeated contact with skin. When used in confined spaces, to avoid fire, explosion and health hazards during application and curing: ensure adequate clean air circulation; use a fresh air mask and explosion-proof (ex-proof) equipment; prohibit all open flames, sparks, welding operations and smoking. Do not discharge into sewage. Take preventive measures against static electricity discharge. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for information on harmful components, required ventilation, possible consequences of contact with the material and safety precautions.
