Surface Preparation
Surface should be clean and free of dirt, wax, grease and oil and all other impurities, using one or a combination of the following methods: detergent wash, solvent wiping or steam cleaning. The substrate must be dried before coating. If present, surface salt should be removed by high-pressure fresh water wash using plenty of water. All loose particles, rust and rust scale on metals should be removed by scraper, steel brush and water jetting. To obtain maximum performance for metal surfaces, the substrate must be cleaned according to Swedish Standard Sa 2½ blast cleaning method. Acid and alkali rust scale should be neutralised by fresh water wash or 5% ammonia solution. New steel must have a surface profile by means of mechanical or chemical etching to provide key. Old aged coatings must be cleaned with water-soluble oil emulsifiers and detergents, then rinsed with plenty of water.
Priming, Mixing, Thinning
Navipol 3700 EN is a two-component product supplied in two different containers with their proper mixing ratio. The entire contents of each container must be mixed together. Power mix the base portion first to obtain a smooth, homogeneous condition. After mixing the base portion, add the converter slowly with continued agitation. After the converter addition is complete, rinse the container with a small amount of T-9 thinner and add this rinsing solution into the mix, then continue mixing slowly. It is recommended to wait about 5–10 minutes before application at 25°C to help eliminate CO2 and air gas. Thinning is not normally required or desired; however, at extreme environmental conditions, small amounts (10% or less by volume) of T-9 thinner can be added. Any solvent addition should be made after the two components are thoroughly mixed. The pot life of mixed material is 4–5 hours at 25°C. Higher temperatures reduce working life; lower temperatures increase it. For aircraft and/or yacht finishing, thinning is extremely important and the paint must be thinned to 15 sec. with a Ford cup. Application must be in two stages: 1) cloud coat, and 2) body coat applied after 1 hour waiting time.
Application
Navipol 369 should not be applied when relative humidity exceeds 85% or the difference between surface temperature and dew point is less than 3°C. The recommended method is spray, roller or brush. After proper priming — clear solvent-free epoxy varnish (Navipox SF varnish) is recommended for concrete, and epoxy A/C primers or wash primer series for steel. When coating in enclosed areas, forced ventilation must be used to remove solvent fumes, aid drying of the coating film, and create a safer environment for the worker.
Precaution
Refer to material safety data sheet of the product. Additional safety information is available upon request. Minimum safety precautions in dealing with the paints are;
- Take precaution to avoid skin and eye contact (i.e. gloves, goggles, face mask, barrier creams, etc.)
- Provide adequate ventilation. Applicators must use face masks.
- If the product comes in contact with the skin, wash thoroughly with lukewarm water and soap or suitable industrial cleaner. If the eyes are contaminated flush with water (minimum 10 minutes) and obtain medical attention at once.
- Since these products contain flammable materials, keep away from sparks and open flames. No smoking should be permitted in the area.
- Observe all precautionary notices on containers.
Xn: Harmful for human health. F: Flammable. Warning signs: R11, R20/21/22, R36/38. Safety signs: S2, S3/7/9, S16, S20/21, S24/25, S38.
