Navilac 416 Primer Zinc Chromate Alkyd Primer
FEATURES
- An economical anticorrosive primer
- Excellent adhesion to substrate
- Metal surface protection
- Compatible with many finishing paints
- Applicable by spray, brush or roller
RECOMMENDED USES
Navilac 416 Zinc Chromate Metal Primer is an economical industrial primer recommended for non-chemical, non-immersion metal surfaces such as structural steel, tanks, equipment and pipe surfaces. It can be used as a first coat for alkyd, latex or oil-based paints and finish coatings in interior and exterior areas.

Surface Preparation
All surfaces must be free of grease, oil and moisture before abrasive blasting to near-white metal to Swedish Standard Sa 2½. After blasting, the steel profile should be 40–60 mic. in depth and of a jagged (sharp-angled) nature as opposed to a peen pattern. The surface must be free of all blasting dust. Navilac 416 Alkyd Primer should be applied to the substrate as soon as possible, before re-rusting or re-contamination occurs. Where blasting is not possible, hand mechanical cleaning — preferably with a motorised disc sander to bare metal — may be carried out. The surface must in any case have the required roughness for maximum adhesion. If Navilac 416 is applied as a barrier coat over an already coated substrate, the substrate should be cleaned by washing with a degreasing and water-emulsifiable detergent or NaviPrep 88, followed by rinsing with plenty of pressurised water.
Mixing and Thinning
Navilac 416 Alkyd Primer is ready to use from its packaging and must be thoroughly mixed with a mechanical mixer and strained through a 30–60 mesh (250–600 mic.) strainer before use. Thinning is not normally recommended; if unavoidable, a maximum of 5% T-5 or T-3 thinner may be added. Paint must be re-mixed after any thinner addition.
Application
To prevent premature drying, avoid application in direct sunlight. Application may be by brush, roller or spray.
Conventional spray method: De Vilbiss P-MBC gun with “78E” nozzle and needle, appropriate air cap combination provides good atomisation. Fluid pressure should be kept low at around 1 bar at the nozzle tip. Excessive fluid pressure causes overspray. Air pressure: 5–6 bar, air volume 0.7–1 m³/min. Ensure suitable moisture and oil traps in the air supply line. Each pass should overlap the previous wet stripe by 50%.
Roller or brush: Apply generously but do not allow runs or sags.
Caution: Apply only when substrate, air and material temperatures are above 0°C. Do not apply if rain is expected within 1 hour.
Safety Precautions
Read the MSDS Material Safety Data Sheet for all required safety rules and warnings. Minimum requirements: skin and eye contact must be prevented (gloves, protective goggles, face mask and industrial barrier cream). Ensure adequate air circulation (during application and until paint is dry). Avoid inhaling solvent vapours (in addition to forced ventilation, use a half-face mask with carbon filter). If paint contacts skin, wash with lukewarm water and soap. If splashed in eyes, rinse with water for at least 10 minutes and seek medical attention. Keep away from sparks and open flames — do not allow smoking in the area. Read all cautionary notices on containers carefully.
