Surface Preparation
Prior to abrasive blasting, remove all grease, oil, salts and moisture. Round off rough welds and sharp edges and remove weld spatter. Abrasive blast to a commercial blast in accordance with Swedish Standard Sa2. The blast profile should be between 37.5 to 62.5 microns. After blasting, vacuum or blow off all abrasive dust and ensure the surface remains clean before painting.
Mixing and Thinning
Navizinc 85 Primer is supplied in kits which contain the proper ratio of ingredients. The entire contents of each container must be mixed together. The zinc metal is ready mixed in the base portion. Stir thoroughly with a slow speed mixer while slowly adding the liquid component. Continue to mix at slow speed to a homogenous condition. At temperatures lower than 16°C, allow a 15 minute induction time before using. Add about 10 minutes for each 6°C lower temperature. Thinning is not normally required or desirable, however, at extreme environmental conditions, up to 10% T-10 Thinner can be added to the mixed components depending on local VOC and air quality regulations. The pot life, 8 hours at 25°C, will be no longer at lower temperatures and shorter at higher temperatures.
Application
Brush and roller: Use primarily for touch-up and repair.
Air spray: Use an agitated spray pot, Graco 222-230 or equivalent. Spray gun: Similar to Graco #800. Fluid tip: .070″ or larger. Air cap: Similar to Graco 04Z. Fluid hose: Minimum ½” ID and maximum length 15 m.
Airless spray: Graco 30:1 Bulldog Zinc Rig. Tip size: .021″ to .025″. Fluid hose: 3/8″ ID and maximum length 15 m. A longer hose length may require an increase in pump ratio.
Pressure pots or pumps should be at the same level or above the spray guns. Keep fluid pressures to a minimum. Care should be taken to insure that proper film thicknesses are applied. Organic zinc coatings hide at very low film thickness. Navizinc 85 Primer can be self recoated.
