Surface Preparation
Surface should be clean and free of dirt, wax, grease and oil and all other impurities using one of the methods of detergent wash, solvent wiping or steam cleaning, or all in combination, before commencing coating. Substrate must be dried. If present, surface salt should be removed by high-pressure fresh water wash using plenty of water. All loose particles, rust and rust scales on metals should be removed by scraper, steel brush and water jetting. To obtain maximum performance for metal surfaces, substrate must be cleaned according to Swiss Standard Sa 2½ blast cleaning method. Acid and alkali rust scale should be neutralised by fresh water wash or 5% ammonia solution. New steel must have a surface profile of 30–50 mic. to provide key by means of mechanical or chemical etching. May also be used over a range of epoxy primers.
Priming, Mixing, Thinning
This product is supplied in two parts in two different containers with their proper mixing ratio. Add the entire contents of the converter to the base portion. Power mix the base portion first to obtain a smooth, homogenous condition. After mixing the base portion, add the converter slowly with continued agitation. After the converter addition is complete, rinse the container with a small amount of T-10 Thinner and add this rinsing solution into the mix, then continue mixing slowly. 10–15% thinning may be required for automated spray machines.
Application
NAVIPOX GLASS COAT GC 4440 can be applied by both conventional air spray and airless spray equipment.
For air spray application: Use a De Vilbiss FF or E with fluid tip of 0.055″–0.070″ and air cap with good break-up qualities. Fluid pressure should be kept low, about 1 bar (15 PSI), with just enough air pressure to get good break-up of coating. Excessive air pressure can cause overspray problems.
Where airless spray equipment is used: Graco 30/1 Bulldog or 35/1 Senator or larger pump is recommended. Recommended tip size is 0.017″–0.019″, providing a good spray pattern. Liquid pressure on tip is about 180–250 Kg/cm². For optimum results, fluid hoses should be 3/8″ ID or larger with a maximum length of 15 m except for the short whip end before the gun. Longer hose length or cold temperatures may require an increase in pump ratio and/or thinning.
NAVIPOX GLASS COAT GC 4440 may also be applied by brush or roller for small areas. Care should be taken that proper and uniform thicknesses are obtained. Epoxy paints may change colour and chalk when exposed to direct sunlight.
Precaution
Refer to material safety data sheet of the product. Additional safety information is available upon request. Minimum safety precautions in dealing with the paints are;
- Take precaution to avoid skin and eye contact (i.e. gloves, goggles, face mask, barrier creams, etc.)
- Provide adequate ventilation.
- If the product comes in contact with the skin, wash thoroughly with lukewarm water and soap or suitable industrial cleaner. If the eyes are contaminated flush with water (minimum 10 minutes) and obtain medical attention at once.
- Since these products contain flammable materials, keep away from sparks and open flames. No smoking should be permitted in the area.
- Observe all precautionary notices on containers.
